Prof. Jen-Yuan (James) Chang is currently a General Director, Mechanical and Mechatronics Systems Laboratories Industrial Technology and Research Institute, Taiwan, and also a Chair Professor in the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering, National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan. From Feb. 2022~Jan. 2025, he has been ever on secondment appointment as a Chair Professor and Sr. Vice President of National Formosa University (NFU) located in Yulin, Taiwan.
Prior to his academic career (USA, New Zealand and Taiwan), Dr. Chang had worked at various posts on research, development, design and manufacturing of various servo-mechanical and robotics areas for high-end computer hard disk drives, the critical data storage devices for AI computation and information storage, with IBM and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies located in San Jose, California (the Silicon Valley), USA. His technical specializations are in the areas of turbomachinery dynamics, vibrations, and controls, robotics, mechanics, design, and mechanical vibrations, dynamics, control, and mechatronics emphasizing on dynamics and control of continuous systems and precision machines.
Dr. Chang is active in government sector including his service as a Program Officer for Taiwan’s national program on additive manufacturing, a Taiwan’s version similar to US’s Advanced Manufacturing Partnership, a Distinguished Research Fellow and a Technical Advisor for Industry and Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Taiwan, and member of Taiwan’s UAV National Team representing National Formosa University in charge of Asia UAV AI Innovation Application R&D Center located in Chiayi, Taiwan.
He is Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), USA, Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), UK, Taiwan’s Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineers (CSME), Robotics Society of Taiwan (RST), and Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (STAM). Currently recognized as a NSTC Research Fellow, Dr. Chang received the Outstanding Research Award in 2019 and 2022 from Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council (aka NSTC, similar to NSF in US) and Distinguished Institution Award and Outstanding Contribution Award from ASME for his contributions in information storage and processing systems.
